Neeraj Gambhir to Step into Executive Director Role at Axis Bank

Neeraj Gambhir Axis Bank

Axis Bank is set to welcome a new face to its top leadership, with Neeraj Gambhir appointed as Executive Director for a three-year term. His appointment will take effect from 4 August 2025 or upon receiving the Reserve Bank of India’s approval, whichever is later.

Gambhir, who currently oversees the bank’s Treasury, Markets, and Wholesale Banking Products verticals, brings more than 30 years of experience in financial services. He joined Axis Bank in 2020, after leading the Fixed Income business at Nomura India. His earlier stints include senior roles at Lehman Brothers and ICICI Bank. A Computer Science engineer by training, Gambhir is also a management graduate from IIM Lucknow. Beyond Axis, he holds leadership roles at Axis AMC and Axis Pension Fund, and is actively engaged with various SEBI and industry committees.

This leadership change comes as private sector banks continue to align with RBI’s expectations for stronger governance, including the presence of three full-time directors alongside the MD & CEO. Gambhir’s deep grounding in risk, treasury, and institutional banking is seen as a strategic fit for the evolving needs of the bank.

In a parallel development, Arjun Chowdhry, Group Executive for Affluent Banking, Cards, Payments, and Retail Lending, has decided to step down. He will formally exit the organisation at the end of business hours on 31 August 2025 to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities. Chowdhry has been a key figure in shaping Axis Bank’s premium retail offerings and was instrumental in leading the integration of Citibank India’s consumer business into the Axis fold. A graduate of St. Stephen’s College and IIM Bangalore, his departure marks the end of a transformative tenure in the bank’s retail and digital banking space.
